Chapter Twenty-Two
Maddox
The tour took a half-hour. Kyle didnât ask many questions, but he listened intently. I noticed whenever I shared a personal tidbit about myself, a cute little wrinkle formed in the center of his forehead. It made me think he was processing and keeping that information safe. Maybe I was losing my mind, but itâs what I hoped, anyway. I hoped he was taking what I was telling him and holding it close.
By the time we made it back downstairs, the storm had let up a great deal. It was still raining, but the thunder and lightning were off in the distance.
âThis is a gorgeous house, Mr. Baron. Iâm feeling better about the layout and am almost positive I wonât get lost, but I make no promises.â
âWhyâs he callinâ you Mr. Baron?â That small voice could only belong to one person. I turned and there he was, all freckles and curly auburn hair. There was a new gap in his mouth where he mustâve lost a tooth.
âWell, good afternoon to you, Ben. I didnât know you were coming over.â I looked behind him, but there was no sign of my sister.
âMommy has a key.â He shrugged as if that was all the explanation needed. âWho is he?â He pointed a small chubby finger at Kyle.
âThis is Kyle. Heâs working for me during the summer. Heâs going to liven up the garden and make it perfect again.â
Ben smiled, his mouth showing proudly the three teeth heâd lost this month alone. âHi, Kyle.â
âHey.â Kyle waved, eyes flitting between me and my nephew.
âWhereâs your mother and sister?â Scooping him up, I rested him on my hip. âWhat are you eating? You weigh a ton.â He didnât, but I loved how he giggled when I pretended to stumble.
âUncle Dox, youâre silly. Youâre a giant; you can lift the world up, up, up. Iâm not heavy.â
Ben was five, almost six, as was his twin sister, Leia. She was far more serious than he was, and had all of her baby teeth, but both had a perfect mixture of their mother, my sister Luna, and their dad.
âFine. Iâll manage. Follow along, Kyle, or youâll miss what Iâm sure will be a show.â I took the stairs and could hear Luna laughing in the kitchen.
âSeriously, Gilly, the pot roast was charred on the outside but perfection on the inside. I have no idea how he did it.â
âYour husband still trying to make the perfect roast?â I asked as I entered.
Luna turned, her eyes narrowed the second she saw me, and I wasnât afraid to admit it was intimidating.
âYouâre not supposed to be here, Dox. You were supposed to be on vacation. But no, you couldnât do it, could you?â Lunaâs long curly hair was tinted a burgundy color, and her eyes were as dark as night. Oddly enough, they always looked like they were smiling even when she was angry.
âI had a little bit of a change of plans, but Iâm not going back to the office until next week, I promise.
