Chapter Twenty-Two

Maddox

The tour took a half-hour. Kyle didn’t ask many questions, but he listened intently. I noticed whenever I shared a personal tidbit about myself, a cute little wrinkle formed in the center of his forehead. It made me think he was processing and keeping that information safe. Maybe I was losing my mind, but it’s what I hoped, anyway. I hoped he was taking what I was telling him and holding it close.

By the time we made it back downstairs, the storm had let up a great deal. It was still raining, but the thunder and lightning were off in the distance.

“This is a gorgeous house, Mr. Baron. I’m feeling better about the layout and am almost positive I won’t get lost, but I make no promises.”

“Why’s he callin’ you Mr. Baron?” That small voice could only belong to one person. I turned and there he was, all freckles and curly auburn hair. There was a new gap in his mouth where he must’ve lost a tooth.

“Well, good afternoon to you, Ben. I didn’t know you were coming over.” I looked behind him, but there was no sign of my sister.

“Mommy has a key.” He shrugged as if that was all the explanation needed. “Who is he?” He pointed a small chubby finger at Kyle.

“This is Kyle. He’s working for me during the summer. He’s going to liven up the garden and make it perfect again.”

Ben smiled, his mouth showing proudly the three teeth he’d lost this month alone. “Hi, Kyle.”

“Hey.” Kyle waved, eyes flitting between me and my nephew.

“Where’s your mother and sister?” Scooping him up, I rested him on my hip. “What are you eating? You weigh a ton.” He didn’t, but I loved how he giggled when I pretended to stumble.

“Uncle Dox, you’re silly. You’re a giant; you can lift the world up, up, up. I’m not heavy.”

Ben was five, almost six, as was his twin sister, Leia. She was far more serious than he was, and had all of her baby teeth, but both had a perfect mixture of their mother, my sister Luna, and their dad.

“Fine. I’ll manage. Follow along, Kyle, or you’ll miss what I’m sure will be a show.” I took the stairs and could hear Luna laughing in the kitchen.

“Seriously, Gilly, the pot roast was charred on the outside but perfection on the inside. I have no idea how he did it.”

“Your husband still trying to make the perfect roast?” I asked as I entered.

Luna turned, her eyes narrowed the second she saw me, and I wasn’t afraid to admit it was intimidating.

“You’re not supposed to be here, Dox. You were supposed to be on vacation. But no, you couldn’t do it, could you?” Luna’s long curly hair was tinted a burgundy color, and her eyes were as dark as night. Oddly enough, they always looked like they were smiling even when she was angry.

“I had a little bit of a change of plans, but I’m not going back to the office until next week, I promise.
